An accurate inter-barycenter distance between two J multiplets can be obtained by deducting the crystal-field correction from the intermultiplet transition energy
, as observed by inelastic neutron scattering. Under favorable circumstances (high symmetry, low temperature, and lack of magnetic order)
is easy to evaluate. It proves to be several millielectronvolts in magnitude and always positive in sign. All necessary equations are given for light rare earths (Pr, Nd, Sm) in a cubic or hexagonal crystal field.
