Utilizing the CR-39 detector to measure the concentrations of alpha emitters in fish samples from the Nineveh Governorate in Iraq

This study aimed to determine the concentration of alpha emitters in local fish in Nineveh Governorate, randomly selected from different locations of fish farms. Alpha emitters residues found in fish can raise concerns about their consumption. It might serve as a sign of radioactive contamination in the local environment. The results showed that the radon gas concentrations varied from 13.69 ± 6.40 to 61.63 ± 6.40 Bq.m−3, radium concentrations from 0.90 ± 0.36 to 4.05 ± 0.48 Bq.kg−1, and the uranium content 0.72 ± 0.33 to 3.24 ± 0.33 µg.kg−1. The average value for above nuclides concentrations were 37.66 ± 3.95 Bq.m−3, 2.46 ± 0.25 Bq.kg−1, and 1.98 ± 0.20 µg.kg−1, respectively. The results for 222Rn content in fish samples were below the allowed limit recommended 100 Bq.m−3 by WHO. These results have revealed the fish were safety from a health hazard point of view.
