In the present research, effect of entering formed free surface air-core vortex over the intake in the reservoir on flow velocity distribution in the pipe is studied, numerically. LES (Large Eddy Simulation) is used for turbulence modeling scheme along with the volume of fluids (VOF) for distinguishing the free water surface. According to the performed verification with the experimental data, it was concluded that the total deviation between numerical results and experimental data was below 15%. Results showed that formation of an air-core vortex on top of the intake affects the maximum velocity components distribution by decreasing the maximum axial (Vz), radial (Vr) and tangential (Vθ) velocities about 15%, 27.5% and 33.7%, respectively. Moreover, peak values of the velocity components relocate to the upper half of the pipe cross section that velocity vectors also confirmed it.
