Sol–gel spin coating has been employed to successfully deposit pure and Mg doped ZnO thin films on glass substrate. X-ray diffraction patterns revealed that all thin film has a polycrystalline hexagonal wurtzite structure. The surface morphology of all thin films turned out to be homogeneous and well covered with grains. Optical band gap energy increases from 3.28 to 3.36 eV with increasing Mg concentration, which confirms that Mg ions have been incorporated into the ZnO host lattice. Photoluminescence spectra show that red emission is observed in Mg doped ZnO thin films. Refractive indices of thin films were calculated from the reflectance spectra. Real part of dielectric constant increase with Mg doping concentration and dielectric loss factor have low value in doped films.
