The concept of entropy emerged two centuries ago. It is a thought-provoking and instructive chapter in the history of physics. We present here a concise review of the emergence and evolution of this fundamental idea. Its initially unnoticed beginning and how it became a key element in the formulation of modern thermodynamics and statistical physics as well as its close relationship with information are discussed, and a modern application is described.
