A brief introduction to the Synchrotron SOLEIL and its upgrade programme

SOLEIL is a third-generation synchrotron radiation source located at the heart of the Paris-Saclay university and technology park. Created in October 2001, SOLEIL came into service in 2008. To continue to provide world-class capabilities and cutting-edge tools to support scientific endeavours, SOLEIL launched its upgrade programme, known as SOLEIL II, in 2020. This project is based on a very aggressive accelerator design that goes well beyond the current state-of-the-art multibent achromat design, while preserving SOLEIL's distinctive assets, namely the very wide range of radiation from terahertz (THz) and infrared (IR) to X-rays, with a natural area of excellence in the soft and gentle X-ray range. Another key objective of the upgrade is to move SOLEIL towards a new operating model that will reduce energy and water consumption. SOLEIL II aims to continue to provide state-of-the-art capabilities and cutting-edge tools to support scientific efforts and ensure SOLEIL's competitiveness for the next 30 years.
