Detecting geologic features, such as fault and contact from ground and airborne potential fields, is commonly done using various boundary detectors. However, these detectors have universal limitations, such as low-resolution results or sensitive amplification of noise. To address these issues, this study introduces a novel detector (NTG) that is an arctan function of the normalized total gradient. This detector has been tested on synthetic and aeromagnetic datasets of the Tuangiao (Vietnam) and compared with results obtained from other detectors. The results show that the suggested detector can provide sharp signals over the source boundaries, and is less sensitive to noise than other normalized detectors.
