The undoped and vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) doped NiO thin films were prepared using sol–gel spin coating method. The synthesized thin film’s photocatalytic activity was evaluated through the degradation of malachite green using UV light irradiation. The XRD pattern unfold that all the films have cubic structure. Raman spectra of doped NiO thin films confirmed the presence of vanadium pentoxide in NiO thin film. The XPS spectrum revealed the presence of v4+ and v5+ ions in the doped NiO thin film. SEM analysis shows that all the films are homogenous, spherical and exhibit porous nature. The UV–visible spectrum showed that the band gap energy values decrease with the increasing doping concentration of V2O5. VSM study shows that V2O5 doping induced the room temperature ferromagnetism in NiO thin film. The film with 15 mol% V2O5 doped NiO thin film showed the highest value of the first order decomposition rate constant. The incorporation of V2O5 on NiO thin film significantly improves the electrical, magnetic and Photocatalytic properties.
