In this research, we studied the settling of an impermeable and permeable planktonic shaped structure in a 2D rectangular fluid domain filled with viscous, Newtonian, incompressible fluid. We conducted numerical studies of the problem using Immersed boundary method (IBM). Parametric studies were conducted to study the variations in parameters, namely structure’s density, permeability of the immersed structure and fluid’s dynamic viscosity on settling velocity(terminal velocity) of the particle. In this research, the authors examined the impact of structure’s initial orientation on terminal velocity. In this work, we also established analytically, as well as numerically, that terminal velocity of permeable structure is higher than as compared to an impermeable structure and with the increasing permeability, the terminal velocity also increases.
