The concept of parcel is revisited on the basis of a critical analysis of its role in the inference of the governing equations of fluid dynamics. Hence, a more strict meaning of the solutions and their link with the so-called kinematic constraint is pointed out. The discussion is limited to the framework of geophysical fluid dynamics.
