Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) has gained increasing attention during the last years in the field of manuscript research, often within the scope of multianalytical studies in combination with other compound or element specific analytical techniques such as external reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ER-FTIR) or X-ray fluorescence (XRF). We present a new software tool for the evaluation of hyperspectral data cubes, which was developed within an interdisciplinary project of researchers from the humanities, computer and natural sciences (Digital Transformation of the Austrian Humanities, DiTAH). It is designed to provide an open-source intuitive user interface for the evaluation and interpretation of hyperspectral images not only for spectroscopy experts, but also for using this kind of data in humanities research. Hyperlyse was applied successfully for creating spectral databases and evaluating hyperspectral data cubes of manuscripts, charters and graphic objects of the fifteenth and sixteenth century. The evaluation enabled the identification of pigments and dyes, the detection of retouching and pentimenti, as well as the visualization of graphic elements from the backside of a parchment folio.
